I might be guilty of overdramatizing here.

When people learn my birthday falls two days after Christmas, the first thing they invariably ask is whether I get screwed out of presents. Far from it. For me, the last week of December has always been a frenzy of shredded wrapping paper and new toys. The only person who's ever balked at the double whammy is my best friend Steve, whose schoolboy allowance couldn't bear the strain that first year. He's a marketing director these days, but the one gift tradition stuck.

No, the real downside of having a birthday over the holidays is that nobody ever comes to your party. I've never had the class sing me happy birthday or co-workers take me out for a birthday lunch. I treated Jamie three times for his October 2nd birthday – two meals and a movie* – but he's up at his cottage today. He was kind enough to mention my impending death on Facebook, however.

Ah, the "happy birthday" wall post. When a free e-card is just too much effort, there's simply no better way to reach out to people you don't like enough to call.

Oh well. More cake for me.
