When the Sumerians first invented writing, they inscribed their cuneiform script on clay tablets. 5,500 years later, people are still reading from tablets, albeit with 3G functionality and an Apple logo.

This was the Christmas e-readers hit the tipping point and I tipped right over with them. And yet, for all the benefits they bring, there's a lot I'll miss about the days of paper and ink. I'll miss the used bookstores and garage sale bargains, where untold worlds of adventure could be yours for pocket change. I'll miss the libraries, cathedrals of the written word famed for a reverent hush enforced by unlikely sex symbols.

Most of all, I'll miss how easy it was to judge people.

I've never been the kind of person to snoop in medicine cabinets, but bookcases are fair game and every bit as indicative of who you really are as what you delete from your browsing history.

Fiction or non-fiction? Murder mysteries or self-improvement? Herodotus tells me you have a passion for ancient history. Stephenie Meyer tells me you have a passion for teenage boys. A Calvin & Hobbes collection tells me you're okay. The Rules tells me you're insane.

Not even having a bookcase tells me quite a bit, as well. At least, it used to. Now it's entirely possible that you're carrying all your books around in your pocket.
