When Pope Benedict clocked out last week, his papal signet ring was ritually shattered with a ceremonial ring-smashing hammer I like to imagine was wielded by Gimli, son of Gloin. It was only the second papal resignation in two thousand years, but the Holy Roman Church had a series of elaborate rituals all ready to go because of course they did. That's why Catholic priests are cinema's preeminent monster hunters. Whether it's vampires, zombies or pre-teens with severe acid reflux, Father Merrin has an app for that. By which I mean the swift and brutal application of Latin smack talk and an Old Testament beatdown.

Now if only they could do something about their in-house monsters.
